Call me crazy, but I think that if you softened Untima's personality a bit -- okay, a lot -- this could be the basis of an etertaining series. Think "Cheers" with an ubergirl bartender/bounc er and a clientele of second-string superheroes and supervillains ...

Personally I don't think this is depressing. Can you explain why you said so, Brantley? I'd think it was obvious. This real monster ends up running the bar, and the other patrons all know she could do away with them as easily or even more easily than she did with Ares. Imagine it was a real bar, and Adam Lanza was there with his Bushmaster... I see your point, but I still think that the basic idea is very clever. Overall Ultima is a true monster - I agree - she's horribly powerful and ruthless to both. So powerful and ruthless that she hasn't a need in the world and simply does what she want, whenever she she wants. The problem is that, opposed to real world "monsters" she can't be caged or executed, unless she allows it. Putting her behind the counter is actually putting her into a psychological prison.

Actually, it's my story, not jabbrwock's. :-) I think your reading of it is as valid as any other. The meaning of a story is as much down to the reader as it is to the author.

First, I think that it's way too soon to be bringing the name of Adam Lanza into a discussion of a comic book fantasy. Second, whether she runs the bar or not, Ultima has absolute power in that setting, and could do away with any other super or group of supers effortlessly. Under the circumstances, having her working to keep the peace at the bar is a pretty darned happy ending for everybody. Compared to almost any other super bad girl story I've ever read, this story is a paragon of redemptive messages. Singling this one out as unusually depressing seems pretty bizarre.

Really? I didn't find it depressing at all. I've always thought that a superwoman would get awfully bored with nothing better to do than destroy things that are so fragile that she doesn't have to try, or ruling a world populated by people who are about the equivalent of ants to her. It's my major issue with super bad girl stories. At least Ultima has come to the realization that universal domination and wholesale slaughter aren't particularly interesting pastimes to anybody with the power to actually achieve them, *BEFORE* destroying the world/galaxy/un iverse.
